We Brits pride ourselves on a range of things, usually mythical. But one thing we could pride ourselves on that is very real is our ability to create litter! We must be one of the dirtiest nations on earth. You only have to walk down any street or drive on any highway to view the accumulation of debris scattering what’s lift of our once beautiful countryside. Now, alongside all the empty cans, the plastic wrappers and the used condoms everywhere is adorned with cast-off blue face masks. ’Discardable’ isn’t an instruction to discard anything, anytime, anywhere. Why can’t we we just put the used mask in our pocket if we don’t want to wear it on the streets? I’ve found them lying inches from a street bin. As you can see from the picture, people just dump them on the beach. We seem more determined to add to the pollution in the ocean than to clean it up. As for protecting us from COVID 19, well, a cast off used mask is more likely to spread disease than to shield anyone from it. But what do we care about but ourselves? The Thatcher years taught us well. ‘There’s no such thing as society;’ ‘Greed is good’; the market has all the answers. Well, answer this. As we teeter on the edge of a no-deal Brexit what is left of this island — a once-mighty power well past its prime whose contribution to the world today is what — a surfeit of litter?
